We’ll have two main areas of concentration, within applied mathematics:
* Signal processing
* Stochastic processes
Each has applications to music.
For signal processing, consider:
* EQ – frequency filtering
* Beat detection in music analysis
These applications will motivate the study of the Fourier Transform, and that in turn will motivate the study of calculus, and so forth.
We can then consider other applications beyond music. For example, the analysis of a EKG signal to determine where the heartbeats occur. Not the deep similarity here: it’s still beat detection!
